ERIE, Pa. – Two Behrend softball players have been honored by the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC). Ashley Gruber (Burton, OH/Berkshire) was named the Player of the Week while Julie Heinl (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) was named Pitcher of the Week.
Both Gruber and Heinl were instrumental in the Lions’ three wins last week, helping Behrend earn their fifth AMCC Championship.
Gruber hit .600 (6-10) with six runs scored, five RBIs, and two home runs. In the bottom of the ninth of the championship game, Gruber left the yard for a walk-off win.
Heinl picked up the win in all three tournament games. The junior was excellent in the circle, throwing 22 innings while allowing just three earned runs.
By winning the AMCC Championship, Behrend earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Lions will face Ohio Northern on Thursday at 4 p.m. in Alma, Michigan.
