Softball Set to Host AMCC Tournament
After winning the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference regular-season title, the Penn State Behrend softball team is set to host the postseason tournament.
ERIE, Pa. – After winning the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) regular-season title, the Penn State Behrend softball team is set to host the postseason tournament.
Beginning on Friday morning at 10 a.m., six AMCC schools will compete for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Lions beat out Penn State Altoona for the top spot with a 16-2 conference record. Altoona will be the No. 2 seed and earn a first round bye as well. D’Youville and Pitt-Bradford will compete in Friday’s opening game with the winner advancing to face the Lions of Altoona. Mt. Aloysius and Pitt-Greensburg will follow. Behrend will take on the winner of that game in Friday’s final game.
Penn State Behrend is led by seven players who are hitting better than .300. Seniors Ashley Gruber (Burton, OH/Berkshire) and Amy Greene (Erie, PA/Strong Vincent) are having excellent final seasons. Gruber is batting .427 with 45 RBIs, 15 doubles, and seven home runs. Greene is hitting .400 with 35 RBIs, 13 doubles and six home runs. Both have also broken the school record for career doubles this season.
Julie Heinl (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) and Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/Northwestern) have been dominating pitchers this season for the Lions. Heinl leads the AMCC in innings pitched (121.1) and wins (14). Fuller has earned nine wins in 94.1 innings of work.
Behrend will be looking for their fifth AMCC championship beginning tomorrow. Live stats will be available for every game of the tournament.
